Our Gloucester Old Spot sows are free range, having the opportunity to forage naturally outdoors, they also have access to comfortable housing should the weather be inclement.
The sows are brought in to an individual stable aproximately one week before they give birth. The litter size is usually between 8 and 12 piglets per sow. If the weather is cold the piglets have the advantage of a heat lamp for extra warmth. Pigs are extremely intelligent and in a matter of hours learn about the heat lamp. The piglets remain with their mother for 6 - 8 weeks and are then weaned and fed on a cereal based ration, and seasonally on cider apples from our large orchard.
We have a flock of 600 breeding sheep which remain out at pasture for the majority of the year and are provided with additional forage from November throughout the winter. The lambing period is during March and the sheep are housed for around 6 weeks before they are due to give birth during which time they are fed a cereal based ration, and home grown hay. Most of the ewes have 2 lambs which are fed on homegrown cereals whilst grazing our clover rich pastures. The ewes and lambs are let outdoors as soon as possible after birth so that they can enjoy their natural environment.
We are Red Tractor Farm Assured. This means we carry out the highest welfare and production standards ensuring that all produce tastes great and is naturally reared.
